The British Lawnmower Association Annual Endurance Race 2011

Lawn mowers were pushed to the limit last night as the annual 12-hour endurance race across the West Sussex countryside got under way, organised by the British Lawnmower Association.

More than 30 teams of three drivers battled through the night in a bid to follow in the footsteps of racing legends such as Sir Stirling Moss and be crowned this year’s champion.

All driving genuine lawn mowers, the team members took turns to race during the gruelling event. The race, which kicked off from Five Oaks, near Billingshurst at7pm, saw competitors reaching speeds of up to 50mph.

A spokesman for the British Lawn Mower Racing Association said the machines had been slightly and they ran without their cutting decks. The main objectives were and still are, no sponsorship, no commercialism, no cash prizes and no modifying of engines,’ he said. ‘The idea being, it would keep costs down and resulted in lawnmower racing being described by Motor Sport News as the cheapest form of motorsport in the UK.’

Autumn in the Garden

With Autumn officially round the corner, its time to pack away the sun loungers, inflatable swimming pools and barbecues and prepare your garden for the colder winter months.  To help you organise your garden in time, here are our Top 10 tips for the perfect autumn garden, taken from the Sunday Times.

Get your garden ready for the Autumn months.

Get your garden ready for the Autumn months.

1. Tidy up!

The very wet summer, combined with a warm September, means that plant mildew will be a problem this autumn. Peter Howarth, from the gardening website gardencentre.co.uk , advises us to be scrupulous about tidying up. “Garden hygiene is more important than ever this year because of the soggy summer. Everything looks very lush and green at the moment, but you could be storing up problems for the future unless you tackle things now.”

2. Dig out the debris

Remove plant debris and diseased leaves from flowers and vegetable patches. Dig up the annuals – plants that last only a season – and put them on the compost heap. Flowering perennials – plants that spring up year after year from their roots – should be cut back. Remove yellowing or dead leaves or flowers before rot develops and remove any weeds hidden under the plant foliage.

Winter gives cuttings and leaves a chance to break down and produce nutrient-rich compost, which will be ready for boosting the garden in the new year. Now is also a really good time to turn your compost heap. It will heat up nicely and then gently rot over winter.

4. Embrace autumn colour

Deciduous trees, such as acers, will provide lovely autumn colours from foliage, bark and berries. Autumn flowers such as crocus and amaryllis add colour, too. Cyclamens come in white and a range of pink shades with glossy green leaves, and add a welcome dash of vibrancy.

5. Plant for the future

This is a good time of year to plant spring bulbs, such as daffodils and tulips, and new perennials – the soil is still warm but moisture levels are increasing. There is still time for plants to establish themselves before the real cold sets in. This is also a good time of year to plant or move shrubs and trees to allow them to anchor down before the growing season. Reflect on what was and was not successful in this year’s planting scheme so that you can adapt your plans for next year.

6. Venture into the interior

Ventilate conservatories during the remaining warmer days to prevent soaring temperatures, but reduce ventilation once the cooler, windy autumn weather sets in. Use shading paint or blinds to help to keep them cool. However, as light levels fall, reduce the shading as well as the watering of any houseplants.

7.Love your lawn

For a lovely lawn next spring, start to mow less frequently and raise the height of the grass as the growth rate slows down. Scarify your lawn by raking out dead grass and moss that has built up over the summer. Follow this with applying an high-potassium autumn lawn feed, which will release the correct balance of nutrients throughout the winter.

8. Cover up the furniture

When there is no more need for garden furniture, store it in the shed or garage to protect it from the winter weather and allow it to dry out. If you can’t do this, cover it with a tough waterproof sheet securely fixed down, taking care to allow plenty of air to circulate so that the furniture is not damp all winter. Wooden items, such as benches or pergolas, may benefit from a treatment of chemical preservative.

9. Give wildlife a hand

Encourage birds into the garden by providing extra food. Place the feeder near a tall shrub, fence or mature tree to provide protection from predators. Plant berry-bearing plants for an extra source of food for birds and other wildlife. Firethorn, rowan and holly plants are recommended.

10. Protect your pond

Cover your pond with a net to stop falling leaves polluting the water, but make sure you clean it regularly to prevent the net from sinking into the pond. If it contains fish ensure that they can continue to breathe by preventing the water from freezing. Make sure the pond is at least 8ft deep because fish live in the deepest levels during the winter months.

Shedding light on Garden Thefts

Gardeners could lose hundreds of pounds in shed theft suggests a recent YouGov survey commissioned by security specialist Yale. Many of us believe our shed contains nothing but old junk but astonishingly, more than a quarter (26%) of people surveyed with a shed said it would cost more than £750 to replace the items stored in there.

garden shed contents theft

Whats in your Garden shed?

Even more surprising then, is that the research showed that 17% of people with sheds do not bother to secure them, even though it could contain high value items such as lawnmowers, gardening tools and garden furniture.

Almost 1 in 10 (9%) people with a shed admitted to having it broken into, which ties into recent British Crime Survey research, which shows that thefts from sheds and gardens increased by 16% to 1.25million crimes between September 2009 and September 2010.

The research also showed that well over half of the people surveyed with shed stored expensive gardening equipment such as lawnmowers (73%), strimmers (57%) and gardening tools such as wheelbarrows (88%) in them.

A Yale spokesman said: “The lack of shed security coupled with the high value of the average shed’s contents means that opportunist thieves are stealing expensive bicycles, golf clubs and gardening appliances from unsecured sheds.

Oxford Bike Chain Locks and Ground Anchors.

Cycling is all about being free and riding in the wind but unfortunately there is a serious element to bikes – and that is the risk of bike theft.

According to a study by the insurance company Direct Line, there are ’1,200 bikes are stolen every day’ (Source: The Independent News Online).  Most of those cycles are stolen because they are either left unlocked for a short period of time or are not correctly secured.  And even when bicycle locks have been used, some locks will be picked or broken by thieves who can spot cheap, poor-quality locks.  By purchasing a suitable, robust lock and using it correctly, most cycle theft can be prevented.

Bike lock chain

Are you using your bicycle lock correctly?

Choosing the right bike lock

When purchasing a lock, the best rule-of-thumb is to spend at least 10% of the cost of your cycle on the lock and never to spend less than £20 on the lock.  We also recommend choosing a keylock – combination locks are very easy to break into and offer little security to the professional bike thief.

Once you have a suitable heavy duty lock, make sure you are using it correctly.  To properly lock your bicycle – simply loop the chain through the frame, and round an immovable object.

Through the frame” means through a closed section of the bicycle frame, such as the front triangle. Additionally, if the lock can also pass through a wheel, it provides additional security.

Round an immovable object” means anything which is bolted down, such as a cycle rack or an iron railing.

If your immovable object is a signpost, be sure that the cycle and lock cannot be lifted over the top of the post. Additionally, a cable (with loops at each end) and a tough padlock is useful when locking a cycle to a larger object such as a lamppost or road sign.

Bike Locker – Customer Review

Asgard have designed and manufactured a wide range of flexible bicycle storage solutions designed for residential use. Whether you have a single bicycle, four or more, you can choose the most suitable bike storage unit for your needs from the Asgard Bike Storage range.
For example, when there are a family of cyclists with 2 adult bikes and 2 children bickes, or you are a keen cyclist with 4 adult sized bikes, storing them safe and secure can be tricky.
However, one of the Asgard customers customers – Jenny Hall found a way to keep all her bikes in 2 Bike Lockers  from Asgard.
We asked her how she felt about her new Bike Lockers and the customer service she received from Asgard….
“As you can see we have 2 cycle storage sheds placed together. They were constructed by one of your staff who did it very efficiently.”

“Its made a great difference with not having to carry our bikes up the front steps and ruining the hallway walls. I would recommend them. We have had metal racks put up inside the sheds to stop them falling against each other and makes it easier to push them into the shed.”

Britain sheds the traditional house extension in favour of outbuildings

Sheds have always been a popular addition in many British gardens but as the Architects DataFile Magazine reports the number of back garden sheds and log cabins now outstrips the number of households in the UK.

The humble garden shed is growing in numbers over the last few years.

The humble garden shed is growing in numbers over the last few years.

Lower construction costs, fewer planning restrictions and the growth of home working are creating a buoyant market for outbuildings -and sheds, log cabins and garden offices are replacing traditional home extensions, according to tradesmen polled by Screwfix.

Analysis of Google Earth images of suburban streets throughout the UK suggests that there may be as many as 30 million outbuildings inBritain, eclipsing the total number of UK households. Sales of sheds are booming as economy-minded households have met their living space expansion needs via lower-cost outbuildings.

Alex Johnson, shed expert and author of the newly-published book ‘Shedworking’, said: “Sheds feed into the pioneering instincts in all of us.  There is something about having a log cabin in the wild.  Whilst most British gardens can’t really compete with the Wild West nor our pets with Wilderbeast, there is a lot to be said for getting away from the bricks and mortar – and in my view that’s why sheds are so popular.”

“Our tradesmen are telling us that their customers are investing in sheds, log cabins and other outbuildings as a way of increasing the size of the domestic living space,” said John Mewett from Screwfix.

“Our study of Google Earth images across the UK confirms just how many outbuildings there are in the UK these days of all shapes and sizes.  We estimate that there are more sheds than homes, possibly for the first time ever.”
