Asgard Motorcycle Garage

“I bought an Asgard Motorcycle garage about a year ago.  I was somewhat stunned by the cost – at £1000 for a shed, I thought … mmnn maybe not – then after a local builder wanted 5k to build me a garage of similar proportions +planning permission and I went for the shed.

The process:  Ordered online after 1st phoning and checking they were a real company.  The shed is approved by a number of companies, however I am always suspicious of online companies.

The shed took 23 days to arrive.  Quite a site when it arrives, a very daunting pile of a dozen or so large metal panels.  The panels are very heavy and required two people to manoeuvre.  They have got trip to casualty written all over them, panels this heavy made from metal could result in lost fingers.  A pair of gloves are a must.

There were plenty of screws sent with it – again – quite daunting.  The instructions were nice and clear, though written by engineers, you can just tell, they have a technical look about they are well illustrated though.  Two of us got the shed together in 90 mins -  all the bits were there and everything went together very well.  A word of warning, the shed has a metal floor, but also a wooden subfloor which sits over the metal floor to protect your tyres.  These bits of wood are unbelievably heavy and a tight fit – watch the fingers with these, they suddenly drop into position.

motorbike_storage_sale_

This is the same for the roof panels, they are also reinforced so very heavy, when you are lifting them on to the structure, they suddenly fit into place and drop into some slots – be careful.

The lock system is super.  Bolts, reinforced doors and a casing around the rear of the lock gives me real assurance this should be a good safe house for my bike.

As the unit is quite high and wide, I am able to perform basic maintenance with the bike in the shed, which is a bonus, though it is quite dark at the back.

I would recommend this product without hesitation – just be careful with your fingers”.

Planning permission for Asgard garden sheds in a grade 2 listed area – not needed!

A recent Asgard customer has found that his Asgard Shed does not require planning permission.

“Hello, i chose your product as it was one of the only secure insurance  approved small garages i could find that could fit my Triumph Rocket 3  inside with enough room to spare.

My house is grade 2 listed and a conventional garage would have cost 20k to  have built to match my house which is a lot to just park a bike in! Took two of us with a cordless drill each 2 hours to build with no dramas. Ample fixings provided so no worries about losing the occassional screw.

Doors close and align perfectly and it keeps the rain out but due to its air  vents it breathes inside so no condensation issues. I would recomend your product where a conventional build garage is not an  option or if you want a garage you can take with you if you rent or move  house regularly”.

Police bike theft squad axed

One of Britain’s last police stolen vehicle squads is to be closed from next year, leaving organised bike theft uninvestigated. The Metropolitan Police’s stolen vehicle squad will be disbanded from April 2012 due to budget cuts.

The unit has been a powerful deterrent to organised criminal gangs that move around the country stealing bikes to order and dismantling them to sell as parts or shipping them overseas. The squad has just one more undercover operation to carry out before being wound up. A source said: “We have one motorbike job we are actively looking at.  We can’t reveal details as it’s a covert operation. We are not looking at taking on any more motorbike jobs as the unit is closing in April 2012.”

A force spokesman said: “The Metropolitan Police Service is having to make substantial savings in line with reducing budgets. This requires difficult decisions to be made about what areas of activity should be reduced. Following wide consultation about priorities,
the Specialist Crime Directorate is considering changes to the Stolen Vehicle Unit.”

He said the proposal “involve disbanding the dedicated proactive investigation team – whose role is to investigate criminal groups involved in the theft of motor vehicles – and absorbing its responsibilities across the organisation”.

Don’t leave your bike unprotected

With news of the Metropolitan Police’s Stolen Vehicle Squad being axed, bikers across the UK need to step up their own efforts to
keep their motorbikes and scooters safe from theft.  And as the majority of motorcycle thefts reported are often stolen from homes and sheds where bikes are left with little or no security, it now falls on you to make sure your motorbike is kept safe and secure when not in use.

The easiest and most effective way is storing your bike in a secure motorbike shed – such as the Asgard Motorbike Garage Unit.  This all-metal Storage Unit will provide your bike with all-year round security.  Matt Hull from RiDE Magazine is very impressed with the Asgard Unit, saying – “If security is an issue, this is the one..I am converted.”

Oxford Bike Chain Locks and Ground Anchors.

Cycling is all about being free and riding in the wind but unfortunately there is a serious element to bikes – and that is the risk of bike theft.

According to a study by the insurance company Direct Line, there are ’1,200 bikes are stolen every day’ (Source: The Independent News Online).  Most of those cycles are stolen because they are either left unlocked for a short period of time or are not correctly secured.  And even when bicycle locks have been used, some locks will be picked or broken by thieves who can spot cheap, poor-quality locks.  By purchasing a suitable, robust lock and using it correctly, most cycle theft can be prevented.

Bike lock chain

Are you using your bicycle lock correctly?

Choosing the right bike lock

When purchasing a lock, the best rule-of-thumb is to spend at least 10% of the cost of your cycle on the lock and never to spend less than £20 on the lock.  We also recommend choosing a keylock – combination locks are very easy to break into and offer little security to the professional bike thief.

Once you have a suitable heavy duty lock, make sure you are using it correctly.  To properly lock your bicycle – simply loop the chain through the frame, and round an immovable object.

Through the frame” means through a closed section of the bicycle frame, such as the front triangle. Additionally, if the lock can also pass through a wheel, it provides additional security.

Round an immovable object” means anything which is bolted down, such as a cycle rack or an iron railing.

If your immovable object is a signpost, be sure that the cycle and lock cannot be lifted over the top of the post. Additionally, a cable (with loops at each end) and a tough padlock is useful when locking a cycle to a larger object such as a lamppost or road sign.

How to fit a Ground Anchor

If you have considered increasing the amount of security for your mototbike or bicycle, you may have considered installing a ground anchor to use with a bike chain.  However, if you are not sure about how to go about installing a ground  anchor, this article will explain how to fit a Ground Anchor to the floor for your Motorbike.  And don’t worry – it’s easier then you think!
Why use a Ground Anchor?

The Bike Site recommends locking your bike using a ground Anchor as it ‘will greatly improve the overall security and drastically reduce the chances of getting your Motorcycle stolen’.
Brute Force Ground Anchor from Asgardsss

Brute Force Ground Anchor

Chaining your bike to something solid and secure such as Ground anchor makes it much less likely it will be stolen. And remember – a ground anchor is not just suitable for motorcycles – it can be used for bicycles, cars, caravans, quad bikes, ATVs. So how do you fit a ground anchor?

If you purchase the ground anchor pack from Asgard , the kit contains everything you need to install the ground anchor. Follow these simple instructions to fix a Brute Force Ground Anchor to a concrete floor.

Before you begin – Important points to note for fitting the Ground Anchor to the Floor:

-          The ground anchor must be secured into a good solid concrete.

-          Before fixing the anchor, plan where it will go before bolting it down.

-          We recommend the use of safety goggles when fitting the anchor.

5 Easy steps:

1)       Using the anchor as a template, drill through the holes with a 12mm masonry drill to a depth of 10mm.

2)       Remove the unit and then re-drill the holes with a 16mm masonry drill to a depth of 75mm.

3)       Vacuum the dust from the drilled holes.

4)       Place the 2 security bolts evenly to a torque of 25>30lbs or as tight as possible by hand with the hex shaped Allen Key provided.

5)       Hammer the 2 steel balls into the top of the socket heads which will prevent the bolts from being undone.

Congratulations! You have successfully fitted and installed your Brute Force Ground Anchor!

Motorcycle Theft Statistics

Motorbikes are becoming an increasingly popular method of transport in the UK, with new bike prices ranging from £1,000 to £20,000 dependent on the make of the bike. Surprisingly though, most bikes irrespective of price are not fitted with additional security measures as standard.

What ever motorbike you own and who ever you are. Lock it up!

What ever motorbike you own and who ever you are. Lock it up!

A recent survey by the National Crime Intelligence Service (NCIS) based on the latest police figures on vehicle crime and performance bikes (500cc and above) has revealed some shocking statistics. More motorbikes are stolen in the UK than are bought new, and it takes on average 20 seconds to steal a motorcycle worth £10,000. The survey is also the first to reveal some of the UK’s danger spots for motorcycle crime, and as such has been distributed to police forces around the country.

”£3 million worth of motorbikes from UK streets every month”.

The report has shown that the theft of motorbikes in the UK has allowed criminal groups to steal £3 million worth of motorbikes from UK streets every month. Thefts are primarily undertaken to sell parts on the black market, although joyriding is also cited as a main cause.

The report is part of Project Contrail, which targets the organised theft of high-powered motorcycles and is seen by many as a prelude to new bikes being registered as a legal requirement (similar to the car register requirement issued by the Home Office). Other results show the thefts are undertaken by a dozen well known, highly organised gangs.

“More motorbikes are stolen in the UK than are bought new”

Some of the key findings in the report include:

More thefts occur in large urban areas.

The thefts are undertaken by a dozen well known, highly organised gangs.

80% of bikes stolen from an owner’s home.

Thefts are concentrated around Central London, probably linked to patterns of commuting.

The top five areas for theft include West Yorkshire, West Midlands and Greater Manchester.

The top four makes of motorcycle that account for over 85 per cent of thefts are Hondas, Yamahas, Kawasaki’s, and Suzuki’s.

The Honda CBR 600 is the hottest bike, which retails at £5000, with 350 of them stolen between July and September 2002.

Steven Powell, Head of the Project Team for NCIS’s Organised Vehicle Crime Section (OVCS), said:

“It is an appalling statistic that more motorcycles are stolen in the UK than were bought new. Urban centres are worst hit, and one favoured modus operandi is simple but effective. The criminals drive a large van up to a motorcycle where accomplices open the van door, thrust scaffolding poles through the wheels, and lift the bike into their vehicle. It takes as little as 20 seconds to steal a bike worth £10,000, and only 16 per cent of stolen bikes are recovered.”

How to reduce the chance of theft?

There are a number of ways to reduce the chance of theft, which include:

After sales fittings:

As annoying as it is most manufactures may not fit your bike with a Thatchem 2-3 way immobiliser it is worth investing in one, as this is the primary method of defence.

Buy additional security locks and remote alarms.

Try and park in Motorcycle designated areas where ground anchors are found. Although there are not a large number of these areas, they are more secure and growing in number.

If possible install a ground anchor at your home address and always keep the bike out of site.

Make sure you are suitably insured from a recognised motorbike insurer

Consider investing in a dedicated motorcycle garage.

Motorcycle Storage and Security – Buyers Guide

Buyers guide  Motorcycle Security and Security

Believe it or not summer has gone.  Did you miss it??? So did we!  So, now is the time for most of us to think about packing the bike up for the winter.  I certainly won’t be braving the icy roads on only two wheel this winter – The long term forecasts predict the same kind of weather as last year – not good for us “summer” bikers.

The Summer - Did you miss it?

The Summer – Did you miss it?

So – what to do with the bike?

Outside in the yard/garden or outside of the house.  Not ideal, you can only rely on the bikes built in alarm so much.  A decent, organised thief will soon have the bike on the back of a truck and gone.  Also, you shouldn’t really have your bike exposed to the elements, a plastic sheet is not really adequate protection from the British weather.  If you HAVE to leave it outside then consider some additional security measures such as a ground anchor or an additional alarm system.

 The ground anchor:

A superb value effective security system.  Our ground anchor packs also include a tough sold secure (www.soldsecure.com) chain.  Simply bolt the tough, solid metal anchor to the ground using the supplied bolts and thread the toughen/hardened chain around your bike and through the anchor.  It’s as simple as that.

Disc alarm:

New to us here at Asgard but they have been an instant hit.  The principle is simple.  Click one of these to your disc brake, press the arm button and there you go.  The bike can’t be physically moved because the disc is locked and thanks to the advanced movement sensor, if the bike is moved a 110db siren goes off.  (you can also use it as a lock only the siren can be switched off) We love these, such a simple idea, but so effective.  We have had these on trial for a few weeks now and never had a false alarm.

The domestic garage:

Perhaps the obvious choice.  If you are lucky enough to have a garage and a garage with room for a motorbike and a car, then you are sorted, right??

Well, no.  In the last year or so “sneak theft” has been on the rise.  Sneak theft is where the thief will “sneak” into your house, to steal the keys to your bike then roll it down the street and away.

Even if you do have a garage it is worth getting a ground anchor or disc alarm.  So if anybody DOES get hold of your bike keys then at least they won’t be able to get the bike out of the garage.

Dedicated motorcycle storage unit

An expensive luxury? Not really.  Many of us either don’t have a garage (that’s city living for you) or we have our car in it.  The most cost effective solution is a motorcycle storage unit (much cheaper than building a new garage and requires no planning permission).  The Asgard motorcycle storage unit and is made from tough galvanised steel – this means it will not rot away at the 1st sign of rain.

An integral vent system in the roof and down the sides of the unit help to prevent condensation inside, so your bike should stay nice and dry through out the winter months.  An integral full metal floor is included, for further strength and stability – with the option to bolt down to the ground for even more security.  The standard package includes a ramp (just wheel or ride your bike into the unit) an internal wooden sub floor (sits in top of the metal floor to protect your expensive tyres), A shelf for storing maintenance equipment and a specially designed helmet and leathers hook!

A tough 5 point locking system ensures this motorcycle store is really difficult to get into.  Featuring a drill and pick resistant Euro cylinder that shears off in the event of an attempted break in, this really is one of the best units you can buy.

But I have a touring bike and that unit isn’t big enough for my bike??

Not to worry.  There is a motorcycle plus unit available for larger bikes.

Motorcyle Theft - Crash And Burn

Motorcyle Theft – Crash And Burn

That’s a quick rundown of the motorcycle storage available from Asgard.  If you have any questions about any aspect of bike security contact us for free advice.

Bicycle Security Alarm Systems.

For bicycle owners, cycle security is one of the most discussed topic; ‘which bike security products are best for my bike’?  Using sturdy padlocks, chains, disc locks, and ground anchors are all recommended when parking your bike at all times but the key message is clear – always double up on security where possible.

This means using at least 2 different types of security measures in order to protect your bike and deter thieves.

iStock_000013900642XSmall

Choose heavy-duty, sturdy locks for your cycle.

The type of bike locks to use will depend on your type of bike, and where you are parking it.  There are a wide range of portable disc locks and chains, ideal for when you are riding around the town, as well as numerous chain locks and ground anchors suitable for securing in your back garden, garage or bike storage unit.

Double up on security

However, as an additional security measure, we would also recommend you to use a cycle alarm system, such as the Screamer Cycle Disc Lock.

The Screamer Cycle Disc Lock with attack activated alarm system.

The Screamer Cycle Disc Lock with attack activated alarm system.

The Screamer Cycle Disc Lock gives you that extra and security for your bike when not in use. Once activated, if someone is then attempts to move your bike or tamper with the lock the 100db siren will activate automatically, emitting a shrill of 100 decibels to put off would-be bike thieves and alert you.

The 7mm locking pin fits through the holes on the brake discs of the majority of cycles. There are 3 keys supplied with the lock, with a key way cover to protect the locking mechanism against dirt and dust. The lock can also be secured without the alarm being activated, if required.

Parking up your bike

And finally – Always park your bike to something solid in a visible place when out riding around the city centre.  Select highly visible locations such as busy streets or in front of store as thieves are unlikely to consider taking your bike if it’s locked out in the open.

And when you park your bicycle up for the night, make sure you store it in either a garage, or in a secure outdoor bike storage unit to keep out of sight and safe from thieves.

Clamping down on Quad Bike theft

Quad biking has been gaining popularity over the recent years with many experienced and younger drivers enjoying the thrill of the ride.  However, the rate of stolen ATVs has also increased across the UK and and once your Quad Bike is gone, it can be difficult, if not nearly impossible, to ever get it back.

Did you know? Less then 5% of stolen Off-road vehicles are ever recovered. (TER report)

Whether it’s urban or rural, more and more people are becoming victims of quad bike theft, with Quad bikes and ATV’s known as “hot property” by the UK police.  PC Mark Godsland, Divisional Crime Prevention Design Advisor from the Gloucestershire Constabulary  said; ‘Quad bikes can be a valuable commodity for thieves and it’s therefore very important that owners make sure that they are secured properly’.

The Asgard team have combined their experience from the secure garden storage unit range to respond to demand from the owners of Quad bikes and motorcycles to provide a convenient yet secure outdoor storage unit to store your bikes.  With this in mind, the team  have designed the  Asgard Quad Bike Storage Unit, an outdoor all-metal outdoor unit  giving you safe and secure storage of expensive ATVs, Quad bikes and off road motorcycles.

The Asgard Quad Bike Storage Unit

Store your precious ATV out of sight in the secure Quad Bike Storage Unit.

The Asgard Quad Bike Storage Unit is built from thick, heavy gauge galvanised (weather proof) steel panels with an integral ramp and convenient large double door access. With security as the main focus, this unit is fitted with a unique 5-point locking system, featuring reinforced hinges and doors for maximum security.  This UK designed and manufactured ATV storage shed is an exceptionally versatile storage unit suitable for both domestic and commercial storage of ATV, Quad bikes and off road vehicles.

Don’t let it happen to you

You may think that it could never happen to you, but stay on the safe side by ensuring you follow these basic safety precautions as recommended by Nationwide Insurance:

1. Keep your ATV in a locked garage on your property. If you must park outside, make sure the area is well-lit.  Thieves look for easy targets and lighting can be a deterrent.

2. Keep the key separate  from the ATV . This simple step prevents ride-away theft.

3. Consider aftermarket options such as a disc lock, which prevents wheels from moving without a key, or an alarm system.

4. Invest in a bike chain, particularly one that can stand up to bolt cutters. Chain your ATV to a U-bolt or another secure object, such as a Ground Anchor.

5. Keep the serial number and photos of your vehicle on file.  These items help police identify stolen property and assist you should you need to make an insurance claim.

And don’t forget – by using a secure storage unit for your vehicle, you may be able to qualify for a discounted insurance on your Quad bikes and ATV’s, check with your insurance company to find out more.
