How to keep your workshop safe from theft

If you love DIY and the tools in your workshop are mounting up, it may be time to get some security.  Tools can be very expensive and are the ideal prize for a thief. Don’t leave your workshop open to theft, get some protection now! There are a number of things to do to up the security in and around your workshop.

Security lighting

Security lighting is one of the cheapest ways to defend your workshop. Put up motion sensor lighting around your workshop, this will make the area around your workshop highly visible and will deter thieves.

Don't be a victim of tool theft

Don’t be a victim of tool theft

Create an inventory list

Make a list of all the tools you own of value and their serial numbers. It is also a good idea to mark these items with your postcode.

Insurance

Make sure your tools are covered by insurance. This way, if they happen to get stolen they will be covered and you won’t lose out.

Neighbourhood watch

If you have a neighbourhood watch where you live, join. This is a good way to help protect not just your workshop, but your home and neighbours.

Alarms!

Get an alarm fitted in your workshop. A motion sensor alarm is a good deterrent to theft as it will sound as soon as someone enters, scaring them away.

CCTV

Now this doesn’t have to be the real thing, but how about fixing some fake CCTV cameras to the outside of your workshop. This will only work if they look convincing and of course if the potential thieves are worried about their identities being discovered. However if you are very concerned about the threat of a break in, it may be worth considering getting the real thing if you can afford the expense.

Secure workshop  storage

Another good way to help protect your tools is by securing them inside a secure storage unit. Placing one of these inside or alongside your workshop will be a great way to deter theft, as they are extremely tough and difficult to get into. Asgard has a range of secure workshop storage units designed to keep tools secure and safe from theft.

Keep your tools secure

These workshop storage units are incredibly strong, made from tough weatherproof steel and fitted with security features such as 5 point locking systems, pick resident locking mechanisms and reinforced doors, panels and hinges to keep thieves out! These workshop storage units are also Insurance Approved to level 1. Visit the Asgard website to find out more about Asgard workshop storage units.

Garden Theft

Gardening has never been more popular. As the recession bites hard more and  more people either have more time on their hands due to the economic down turn or they have decided to grow their own produce.

This has resulted in a massive surge in garden equipment and garden related sales. Have you noticed just HOW busy the garden centres are these days!  This is great news for the environment and a great way of saving a bit of money.  One positive aspect of the recession is that garden tools are now cheaper than they have ever been, so there really is no excuse to getting your hands dirty.

Unfortunately this positive green action has given rise to a sharp increase in garden related theft.

The most common targets are small hand held tools such as spades and forks.  These can be easily concealed under a coat or jacket and sold for only a fraction of what they cost you.  You may also be at risk from house theft as garden tools are often used to gain entry to property.  See our blog on house burglary.

I have collected some information from online gardening websites and pulled together some hints and tips on securing your garden against theft.

Safe Tool Storage

Insurance

The first thing you should be doing is ensuring that your home contents insurance covers all of the equipment which is kept outside of the house and that it is sufficient to cover the total value of these garden items. If you have items of specific value – for example a ride on mower, you may wish to consider a dedicated garden insurance policy.  Garden insurance is often over looked by home owners

Only ten or so insurers in the UK offer garden cover as standard…

Sheds and Garages

At one time, you would be able to keep all of your garden valuables in a small shed but such are the array of tools and other gardening gadgets on offer these days that sheds have got bigger and, for those of us with garages, the space is now being utilised more for the rest of our garden equipment which will no longer fit in our shed so you need to put yourself in the mindset of a potential burglar and determine how easy you’d think it would be to break into them.

A good quality metal shed like seem like a quite a large investment (several hundred pounds) but think of how much it will cost in time and effort to replace the contents of a shed that has been broken into.  This is a list of the average shed contents:

Lawn mower – £150

Garden furniture – £499

Tools (rakes spades etc. £200

Paint – £35

Childrens bikes – £80

Ladders – £60

Misc – £100

Over £1000 in total.

So why buy a £99 shed to store 10 times the value inside?

Metal garden sheds are ideal for storing tools

Metal garden sheds are ideal for storing tools

Many people over look the content value of their shed.  Lets not forget the added concern with shed theft. Thieves will often break into your house using your own garden tools.

Pete Spicer, Crime Prevention Officer, said: “The Police often stop and search known burglars to see if they are “going equipped” to do a burglary. So rather than take anything with them they will use whatever they can find to force entry to a house – having an unsecured shed could mean the difference between being broken into or not.”

Fences, Gates, Bushes and Security Lighting Systems

All of these are good all additional barriers for a burglar to negotiate before they can even get near to your shed or garage so make sure you have these things in place to deter thieves in the first place.

Marking Your Equipment

Thieves prefer items which they can get rid of quickly and because gardening and hobbies related to the garden have become increasingly popular, they are attracted to gardening tools, in particular, because they’re very easy to sell on. Therefore, mark each piece of equipment with both an invisible pen containing your postcode (to track your stolen items) and also in a visible way to deter the theft in the 1st place/.  With these simple measures in place a thief is more likely to move on to another target where security might not be so much of an issue.

When You’ve Run Out Of Storage Space

If you find you’ve used up all of the available storage space in your shed and garage, it’s a good idea to fix items to an immovable object or, if it’s some type of equipment which can be operated without moving it, maybe you could set the base in concrete.   Ground anchors are a very cheap method of doing this.  Normally used for securing bike and motorcycles these can be a highly effective method of protecting your equipment.  The best ground anchors to look for carry a sold secure badge.  For more information about Sold secure products.

Tell Your Neighbours

It’s important that you don’t get over-obsessed about preventing your garden gear being stolen. By following the advice above and taking other advice from other articles contained in this section, it should be more than enough to put off a potential thief who would much sooner prefer to find an easier target to hit. However, if you’re going away on holiday or on business and leaving your property empty, it’s a good idea to let your closest neighbour know when you’re going and when you’ll be back so that they can keep an eye on things for you.

Top ten tips for securing your garden and garden equipment.

1. Write your postcode on valuable garden items such as barbecues with ultra-violet pen

2. Check your sheds and gates for winter deterioration, and repair if necessary

3. Replace any rusting padlocks or locks with stronger alternatives

4. Take photographs of valuable items to keep in case of theft

5. Always go for a metal shed as opposed to a wooden one.  Metal is stronger and much harder to break into.  A good quality metal shed will be galvansied, lasting decades rather than months.

6. Protect statues with a simple alarm that will go off if they are moved

7. Secure valuable trees with tree anchors

8. Use prickly plants such as roses or pyracantha to deter thieves

9. Install good garden security lighting

10. Lock away valuable items after you have used them.

Britain sheds the traditional house extension in favour of outbuildings

Sheds have always been a popular addition in many British gardens but as the Architects DataFile Magazine reports the number of back garden sheds and log cabins now outstrips the number of households in the UK.

The humble garden shed is growing in numbers over the last few years.

The humble garden shed is growing in numbers over the last few years.

Lower construction costs, fewer planning restrictions and the growth of home working are creating a buoyant market for outbuildings -and sheds, log cabins and garden offices are replacing traditional home extensions, according to tradesmen polled by Screwfix.

Analysis of Google Earth images of suburban streets throughout the UK suggests that there may be as many as 30 million outbuildings inBritain, eclipsing the total number of UK households. Sales of sheds are booming as economy-minded households have met their living space expansion needs via lower-cost outbuildings.

Alex Johnson, shed expert and author of the newly-published book ‘Shedworking‘, said: “Sheds feed into the pioneering instincts in all of us.  There is something about having a log cabin in the wild.  Whilst most British gardens can’t really compete with the Wild West nor our pets with Wilderbeast, there is a lot to be said for getting away from the bricks and mortar – and in my view that’s why sheds are so popular.”

“Our tradesmen are telling us that their customers are investing in sheds, log cabins and other outbuildings as a way of increasing the size of the domestic living space,” said John Mewett from Screwfix.

“Our study of Google Earth images across the UK confirms just how many outbuildings there are in the UK these days of all shapes and sizes.  We estimate that there are more sheds than homes, possibly for the first time ever.”

Shed with Ramp

A garden shed is ideal for storing large bulky items if you are limited in space inside your home or garage but require somewhere sheltered, safe and secured for long term storage.

However, if you are storing heavy items such as bikes, motorcycles, scooters, or various gardening equipment, such as wheelbarrows ans lawnmowers, you may require an access ramp to be able to move them in and out of your shed.   Ramps make it easier to get large items in and out without causing damage to your back by lifting them into the shed.
A shed with a ramp makes like easier!

If you intend to keep large items which will be regularly used and taken in and out of the shed, we advise you to buy a shed with a ramp.  Asgard, has a range of secure sheds, designed with an optional metal ramp available which is attached to the shed frame, allowing you to wheel in your vehicle.  The ramp simply folds under the base when not in use.

Cleaning your Garden Shed or Garage.

When is the last time you tidied the garden shed or garage?  If your shed has become the dumping ground over the years and you have run out of space to store your gardening tools, equipment and garden furniture then its time for a clear out!  You may be surprised to rediscover all the junk and clutter you have accumulated and free up a lot of space in for storage.

What’s lurking in your garden shed?!

What’s lurking in your garden shed?!

Follow our simple step-by-step instructions to clear out your shed and create an  organised and tidy storage for your property.

  1. To begin with, take everything that is already in your shed outside and empty it completely – you might want to choose a warm day for this!
  2. Keep a few heavy-duty bin bags handy as you sort so you can easily toss things away.  Dispose of anything that you don’t want or need anymore.  Be ruthless — get rid of all the broken equipment, rusted tools, and toys that are missing pieces. The rule is if you haven’t used it for two years then it’s time to get rid of it.  Haul the recyclables to the recycling centre, and check www.eiae.org to learn where you can drop off hazardous waste, such as computer equipment and paint cans.Shelves and hooks for your garden shed.
  3. Make the most of your storage space by investing in a workbench, shelving units, hooks and tool racks and attach to the wall.  This frees up a lot of space on the floor, and keeps boxes, packets, bottles, pots and trays in order.
  4. Worried about pests? Place a mousetrap or bait box in your shed to prevent vermin getting inside your garage or garden building and causing damage.
  5. Use security marker pen to label all your expensive lawn mowers, garden tools and power tools, bbq’s and bikes with your house number and postcode. This is the simplest way to help to identify them in case of theft.
  6. Finally, make sure you have a strong lock on your shed to prevent thieves breaking into your shed, especially if you have a wooden shed.  Alternatively, invest in a metal garden shed – such as the Asgard Compact Storage Unit, which is a high quality secure shed with a robust locking system available in a range of colours.

Get your Garden ready for summer!

We have already had a taste of summer in the last couple of weeks over the Easter break, and most have us have been slightly unprepared for all the sunshine! Its tempting to spend more time outdoors in the warmer months and make the most of your evenings and weekends in your garden.

Get your garden looking great for summer!

Get your garden looking great for summer!

So if your garden needs sprucing up in time, we’ve put together a little checklist to make sure your garden is looking great, and is ready for you and your family to spend more time outdoors for gardening, bbq’s, parties and soaking up the sun.

Firstly, start of by making sure all gateways and entrances are clean and tidy – picking up any rubbish, weeds that may have cropped up.

After that, get your shears out and neaten up any hedges, pruning large plants and trees and repainting any boundary fences.  Remove branches that are crossed, preventing air from circulating, or casting deep shade into your garden. Newly planted trees may also benefit from the early removal of a few overcrowded branches.

If you have a lawn, or some grass, which hasn’t been mowed for some time, then you can also use your lawnmower to mow the area as well as tidy up the fringes of a lawn.

Another tip for revamping an outside space in readiness for spring is to plant some flowers bulbs or seeds.  To help you decide what plants grow best during early Spring, Alan Titchmarsh offers choosing the best spring flowers in his article – The First Bulbs of Spring.

Now is a great time to look at any garden building or sheds, either cleaning out your existing shed, or investing in a new garden shed for keeping all your gardening tools, equipment lawn mowers, bbq’s and any other items cluttering up your garden.  Not only will this keep them out of sight, but it will also keep them safe under lock and key.

Garden Sheds A Buyers Guide

Buyers guide – Garden Sheds

A dull subject ??? perhaps so, perhaps not.  A garden shed is just a garden shed??  Oh No… As the recession hits, garden crime is increasing at an alarming rate.  What do we mean by garden crime??  – Somebody pinching your daffodils?? – No.   Tool theft is the problem. They are expensive, untraceable and usually uninsured.  The trend is to break in to a shed and:

1: Steal the tools and sell them

2: Use your tools to break into your house

The solution? A decent secure storage unit.

So what are the Garden Shed options:

No Shed:  You can always leave your tools in the garage.  As with our bike storage guide, not everybody has a garage and often they have a car in them!

Wooden sheds.  In the same way we don’t supply cheap bike locks, we don’t supply cheap, wooden sheds.  Why?? They offer no virtually no protection from theft and require constant maintenance (refelting, painting, rot protection) So, a “bargain” £99 shed ends up costing you time and money in the long run.  Typically a wooden shed will only last a few years.  No matter how many times you apply weather guard to the structure, it will begin to rot.  Also, from a theft point of view, a wooden shed offers little or no protection.

Wooden Garden Sheds

Wooden Garden Sheds

Metal sheds:

Good quality, weather proof sheds with decent locks and a built in floor will save £££s over the years.  Look for a galvanised finish as this will ensure the shed will be weather proof and rust proof.  A full metal construction ensures the unit will be theft resistant – assuming the shed is made from a decent thickness of steel.  Also look out for an integral metal base.  A lot of entry level sheds don’t have a base (that’s why they are cheap).  Without a base, the shed will leak, have condensation issues and will be easy to lift up or push over.  The shed construction is also important  -how is the shed put together??  Asgard sheds are built inside out.  So there are no exposed screw heads on the outside of the unit – looks good and stops thieves from unscrewing the door from the outside.  Finally, historically the biggest issue with Metal Sheds has been condensation, cold metal and a warm lawn mower = moisture = rust.  Asgard use air vents hidden in the roof eaves on all units – actually the Flexistore range has even more ventilation with additional fascia slots.
