Get ready for the Barbecue Season!

Now that summer has finally arrived, its time to dust off the barbecue and get the party started outdoors! Inviting all your friends and family round and cooking a meal outdoors is the best way to spend an evening or weekend when the sun is shining and you want to make the most of the time off from work.

A barbecue meal can be a refreshing change after spending the colder months indoors but during periods of hot weather, the London Fire Brigade has seen an increase in barbecue and grass related fires.  

That is why they have put together these top tips on BBQ safety and fire safety outdoors. 

BBQ safety tips:
  • Keep a bucket of water, sand or a garden hose nearby for emergencies
  • Never use a BBQ indoors (yes, people do!)
  • Never leave a BBQ unattended
  • Make sure your BBQ is well away from sheds, fences, trees, shrubs or garden waste
  • Keep children, pets and garden games away from the cooking area
  • Empty ashes onto bare garden soil, not into dustbins or wheelie bins. If the ashes are hot they can melt the plastic and cause a fire
  • Never use petrol or paraffin to start or revive your BBQ, use only recognised lighters or starter fuels on cold coals
Gas BBQ safety tips:
  • Store gas cylinders outside away from direct sunlight and frost
  • Take care when turning bottled gas BBQs on and off
  • Make sure the tap is turned off before changing the gas cylinder
  • After cooking turn the gas supply off first and then the BBQ control. This will stop any gas from leaking
  • Change gas cylinders outdoors or in a well ventilated area.

The last of the Summer BBQs

With summer season officially drawing to a close in the next few weeks, if you have not had a chance to host your very own BBQ party by now, we recommend that you join in with this family friendly outdoor dining experience whilst you can…and to help you on your way – we’ve put together some BBQ basics to help you throw a party to remember!

Step 1 – Choose your BBQ

Essentially a choice between a Charcoal or a Gas powered barbeque – this will depend on which one you prefer.  Although charcoal barbeques may be the cheaper option, they are often messy and difficult to handle.  On the other hand, gas barbeques are quick, easy to use and fully controllable heat – it’s not difficult to see why so many people opt for gas barbecues

Serve up a BBQ burger bonanza!

Don’t forget – You will need to set up your BBQ with either gas or charcoal so stock up before hand and store them somewhere safe, ideally in well ventilated and dry area, such as a metal garden shed or a secure gas bottle storage, like the one pictured below, available from Asgard.

Guide to Gas Storage at your Caravan (Part 1)

If you’re currently preparing for your next caravan holiday, you will know that you won’t get very far if you haven’t thought about your bottled gas supply.  Your caravan will use gas for cooking, heating and maybe even lighting so it’s important to make sure you have the correct gas and equipment on-board and ready for your caravan break.

Home from Home – The alternative holiday break

As they can potentially pose a significant risk, it is equally important to consider how you will store your gas bottles safely and securely.

Fire risks

Your gas bottles should be stored in a locked storage unit because they pose a fire risk. Don’t forget to check you have the correct fire extinguisher for the protecting you and your caravan against any fire risks.

Remember: When not using your caravan, ensure that all gas bottles and your appliances are turned off.

Security measures for your gas bottles

Seasonal Maintenance

The winter months are usually a time when your caravan may be closed up and if you have not ensured your van is ready for the frost and months of idleness then you could be facing big problems and even expensive repair bills.

If you are not going to be using your van during the winter, it is recommended that you remove all gas cylinders and store in an adequately ventilated location.  Ensure that all cylinders are fully turned off and the gas compartment is locked.  Keep in mind that when storing Butane gas, it begins to freeze at temperatures below 4°C whereas Propane does not.

The Lawns trade show in Cottingham, near Hull, is Europe’s largest caravan trade show and generally features more than 120 new touring caravans and about 180 caravan holiday-homes, lodges and park homes from most of the major British manufacturers, as well as an ever-growing number of supplies and services exhibitors – showing everything from awnings to steps, security products to soft furnishings for static caravans and mobile homes.  The show attracts about 3,500 trade visitors from throughout the UK, and many parts of Europe and Scandinavia – and sometimes even further afield!

This show is open to the public during the weekend prior to the trade show.  The annual Caravan Extravaganza gives enthusiasts from all over the UK their first opportunity to see the new season’s models.

A massive accessory shop is set up within The Lawns Centre; there is a small funfair for children, hamburger and other food stalls, including ice creams, and all sorts of other entertainments to make this a fun day out for the family.
