The benefits of outdoor storage

If you are considering outdoor storage for your home, whether it be cycle storage, a garden shed, or something for general storage use,  there are many benefits of having outdoor storage at your home.

Provides more space

One of the best benefits of an outdoor storage unit is that it frees up much needed space in your home. Depending on the size and purpose of the unit, you can store vast amounts of items inside. How many items do you have in your house that you rarely use? If you are considering outdoor storage for general items, you will be surprised at how quickly you can fill it. Your home will become yours again, it will feel bigger and will no longer be a slave to clutter.

Minimise the clutter in your home

Keeps your home clean

If you are thinking of purchasing a dedicated storage for items such as your bike, this can help to keep unnecessary dirt and mud out of your home. Dragging muddy bikes through the house is not an ideal situation and can cause added mess, dirt and hassle. Cycle storage will reduce this hassle considerably, by keeping everything outside and away from the home. Even if you don’t have a lot of room, there are lots of sizes available to choose from.

Organises your stuff

Outdoor storage offers you a way of organising surplus items that don’t need to be stored in the home such as children’s toys, which can double before you know it. Dedicated storage for items such as bikes, not only provide a place to keep your bike, but also all the accessories associated with it. With storage like this, finding specific items will be easier as items will be under one roof, rather than just somewhere in your house!

A retreat

Depending on the size of your storage unit, this can be used as a quick retreat from the hectic home. As men have done for years with sheds, in a large storage unit you can spend a long time tinkering and getting some much needed space and alone time. This is particularly the case if using the unit as a motorbike garage, garden shed, or as a workshop.

Asgard storage for all needs

A wide range of metal storage units are available from Asgard. All made from strong weatherproof steel, these sheds come in a variety of sizes and are designed for various purposes. With outdoor storage for fishing equipment, Ski’s, space saving bike storage, garden sheds and more, regardless of its purpose there is an outdoor storage unit for you. Visit the Asgard website to see the full range.

Store your Trike with the Asgard Bike Storage Shed

The best thing about the Asgard Motorbike shed is that the large spacious proportions means that it is not only is it suitable for storing up to 2 motorbikes as well as all your riding gear, leathers, helmets, boots and bike accessories, it can also provide secure multi-purpose storage for a variety of uses.

Asgard customers Peter and Jackie Hall decided to store a Trike, a motorised 3-wheeled scooter in the motorbike shed. We asked them what they thought about using the Asgard bike shed to store their trike.

How did you find the delivery service from Asgard and assembling the bike shed?

“My first impression was on delivery of the parts of the shed: the delivery men were excellent; very careful with their handling and couldn’t be more helpful, giving me tips on the assembly that proved invaluable. Assembly was remarkably straightforward, given the number of parts and the weights and sizes involved. I had to do the assembly single-handed, but this was no problem.  The instruction diagrams were clear and obvious to follow, and during assembly I was frequently noticing just how cleverly thought-out is the design down to the finest detail – everything just flowed together and potential difficulties had obviously been foreseen and averted.”

The Asgard shed is suitable for storing a trike and disability scooters safely

Were you impressed with the finished product?
“The completed shed is superb! Everything about the shed testifies to its quality. The wood floor is a boon: apart from providing a smooth, comfortable base it also deadens quite a lot of the metallic booming sound that was noticeable during assembly.”

And is the bike shed suitable for the intended purpose of storing the trike?

“Our use of the shed has nothing to do with motorcycles!! My wife is disabled, so we use the shed to store her disability “trike” (i.e. a front wheel attachment converts her wheelchair into a mechanised trike with an electric motor that whizzes her along at up to 16 mph). We have especial needs of easy access and copious accommodation, and this it provides. She particularly appreciates the convenience and ease of use of the fitted ramp, and the double doors that allow a wide entry space. Headroom is fine and the generous proportions of the shed allow plenty of freedom of movement around her trike. And we are comfortable knowing that the shed is very secure, yet easy to lock / open.”
“Arthritis is not a pleasant affliction, but that does not mean we can’t enjoy a quality of life. Our set-up with the disability trike and its spanking new storage shed gives her a facility she takes pleasure in using. Thank you for supplying such a cleverly thought out and functional product.”
Best wishes,

Peter and Jackie Hall

Getting your first Moped

If you have been dreaming about the freedom a motorcycle can give you since you young, but are not old yet enough to buy your dream Harley Davidson, and an ordinary bicycle doesn’t quite reach the speeds of a motor-powered roadrunner, then you might want to consider getting a Moped.  Mopeds provide a cheap, fun and stylish way onto the road. They appeal to both novice users and experienced road users looking to downsize or just have a bit of fun.

Moped for beginners!

If you are thinking of buying a Moped then there are few things you need to be aware of:

1)       Licensed to ride

In order to be able to ride a moped in the UK, you must be over the age of 16 and have a Moped License. Before you can start riding a moped on the road, you must first get your provisional moped licence and then complete your compulsory basic training (CBT). You can then start riding a moped on the road as a learner with some restrictions in place e.g. your moped must have L plates.

Click here for more details on applying for your Moped license in the UK.

2)       Choosing your first Moped

Now for the exciting part!  If you already have a particular scooter in mind, this will make your purchasing decision a lot easier.  Alternatively, do your research by visiting garages, websites and scooter comparison and review sites, or discuss your options with other scooter experts on web forums before you make your decision.

Check out http://www.scootercentral.co.uk/ for a range of mopeds and scooters as well as common FAQs for buying your first bike.

3)      Before you get on your bike, don’t forget about safety!

Buy a Motorcycle Helmet and Accessories.  If you need help deciding on your helmet, compare your options using the new SHARP - The Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme.  The SHARP rating system helps you make a more informed choice when choosing a helmet.

Browse through reasonably priced start-up equipment at http://www.shires-motorcycle-accessories.co.uk

4)       Register your Moped

Make sure you register your moped or scooter.  If it isn’t, the police won’t treat you seriously when it’s stolen.  You will need to complete a Moped registration pack and submit it to the DVLA (registration costs approx £55).

5)       Get the right locks for your moped

Always make sure you lock up your vehicle when you are out and about.  Double up on security by using a Disc Lock and Chain locks when you park up.  Look out for Sold Secure and Thatcham approved locks.

Disc locks secure onto the front or rear brake disc making it impossible to ride the moped.  Chain locks come in different strengths and sizes. They can be used around a wheel to secure your moped to an immovable object and prevent it being lifted.

6)       Storing your Moped Securely

And finally, once you are all kitted out and ready to go, where are you going to store your little beauty when you are not riding it?  Unless you store it out of sight, either in a garage or a storage unit, your bike may be at risk from theft. With thousands of motorbikes, scooters and mopeds being stolen every year, always take maximum precautions for your bike to keep it safe at all times.

Consider investing a secure Moped Storage Unit from Asgard, an all-metal outdoor storage unit for your motor scooters, mopeds and accessories.

Another article about Scooter Storage

Its all interesting stuff!

Car drivers are feeling so pinched by the cost of motoring that they’re switching to scooters en masse. Or at least that appears to be the case, based on figures from the Motorcycle Industry Association, which show a spike in scooter sales.
Figures show a 12 percent rise in new scooter transactions in 2011, despite motorcycle sales falling during the same year, and scooter sales having fallen by almost ten percent the previous year (2010).

The sales charts show that while there was a 20 percent rise in 125cc scooter sales specifically, there was a 32 percent drop in the sales of powerful sport motorcycles.

Avoid Scooter Theft
Quoted in The Guardian, Gary Thomas of Scootering magazine said: “The last time I remember such huge scooter sales figures was about 10-12 years ago when new automatic technology meant that all manufacturers came out with a wealth of new models.

“I suspect this time it is about cost. It is often two-car households who have decided that one of them will trade their car in for a scooter. The congestion charge also has an impact on people’s decision, as does the price of petrol.”

Scooter sales in the capital are, naturally, on the up, with Peugeot and Honda reporting jumps of around 60- and 40 percent respectively.

Peugeot believes it is fuel costs that are prompting the switch from cars to scooters, as well as parking charges, which are dramatically reduced (often free) with a scooter.

New car sales were down by 4.4 percent in 2011 compared to 2010, with 1.94m sold in the UK, though with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders having predicted 1.92m sales, that’s seen as a good result.

Diesel car sales surpassed petrol car sales for the first time ever in the UK in 2011 – more proof that vehicle running costs are higher than ever on the agenda.

Two wheels good: scooter sales show huge rise – from the Guardian Newspaper

Shedforce like to look for interesting information, so here is some more;

The Number of new scooters registered with the DVLA rose by 12% in 2011 as rising petrol prices, rail fares and car park charges turn commuters on to two wheels.

The number of scooters registered with the DVLA rose by 12% in 2011. Motorists sick of rising transport costs have been trading in their cars for a two-wheeled alternative, with industry figures showing an unprecedented rise in the number of scooters sold in 2011.

Figures from the Motorcyle Industry Association (MCIA) show the number of new scooters registered with the DVLA rose by approximately 12% in 2011, with a 20% rise in the number of larger 125cc motorcyle scooters registered.

Peugeot said it had seen scooter sales rise by 46% in 2011, with a 62% increase in Greater London, while Honda – which manufactures the most popular 125cc model on the market, the PCX 125 – has seen sales increase by 39%. In 2010 it sold 765; in 2011 it sold more than 2,000. By contrast, almost all other categories of two-wheeled motorised vehicles showed a drop in registrations, by as much as 32% in the case of sport motorbikes, according to the MCIA figures. In the previous year, to December 2010, sales of all types of motorcycles fell. In that period the number of scooters sold also fell, by 9%. Gary Thomas, editorial assistant at Scootering magazine, said: “The last time I remember such huge scooter sales figures was about 10-12 years ago when new automatic technology meant that all manufacturers came out with a wealth of new models.

“I suspect this time it is about cost. It is often two-car households who have decided that one of them will trade their car in for a scooter. The congestion charge also has an impact on people’s decision, as does the price of petrol.” A spokesman for Peugeot said the overriding factor driving customers into its showrooms was the price of petrol and diesel. “An average small capacity scooter is twice as economical as a car for fuel, so you can instantly halve your motoring costs,” he said. A rise in the cost of car parking at train stations has also contributed to people’s decision to switch to two wheels, he said. Southeastern trains has put up prices at 28 of its station car parks by up to 30%, while East Midlands, Southwestern trains and First Capital Connect have also increased their prices. This follows a 5.9% rise in the cost of a train ticket, which came in for all rail passengers earlier this month. “Not only have prices gone up at stations, but there is also often insufficient parking,” the Peugeot spokesman said. “If people switch to two wheels they can often park for free, or find somewhere else nearby to park.” The number of manual gearbox “boy racer” style mopeds registered with the DVLA fell in 2011 by more than 20%, while the number of registered scooter style mopeds rose slightly. This is because smaller engine vehicles have traditionally been bought by teenagers and funded by their parents. “Parents are not willing to do that anymore,” the Peugeot spokesman said. Saving a fortune John Sjolund and his wife Susan Moolman invested in a Vespa scooter eight months ago. The couple bought it second hand and say it has saved them a fortune in commuting costs.

Scooter sales on the rise

They claim they spend about £5 a month on petrol, but use it every day in London. “We live in Fulham [south-west London] and would sometimes spend an hour-and-a-half on the tube a day going to various meetings. It was depressing and expensive,” Moolman explains. “We thought about getting a car but that is such an expensive option.” Now the couple share the scooter, with Moolman sometimes taking the tube and Sjolund picking her up in the evening. “The night before the royal wedding we drove through Leicester Square and past Buckingham Palace to look at the wedding preparations,” Moolman says. “It feels like such a great way to see the city.”

Motorcycle theft prevention

Motorbike theft prevention tips

Following some of these simple guidelines could decrease the chances of your bike becoming a target for thieves.

Secure Location - when at home, store your bike in a secure location such as a garage, storage shed, or locked fenced area. Even if you’re only leaving your bike for a short period of time, make sure it’s secured. When you’re away from home secure it by locking several bikes together or to a secure object that can’t be dismantled.

Do Not Attract Thieves - do not leave any valuables or accessories on/in your bike that a thief could easily view.

Use Locks - sometimes using multiple locks can deter thieves. Locking the spokes of your bike can reduce the chances of it being stolen, making in unable to be rolled away.

motorbikestorage

Using high visibility locks, bright coloured or heavy duty, can also deter thieves from attempting to take your bike.

Highly Visible - By leaving your bike in a well lit area or covered by CCTV you immediately increase the chances of its visibility and reduce the likelihood of it being stolen.

Documents - keep all documentation connected to your bike on your person and NOT on your bike. In the event of a theft it will make it easier for ownership to be verified and to proceed with an insurance claim.

Mark It- By placing a distinctive mark on your bike, it will mean it can be easily identified if stolen. However be sure not to mark it with anything which may distinguish you, such as your name or postcode.

Alarm It - Installing an alarm on your bike could reduce the chances of it being stolen and can reduce your insurance.

In the event that your motorcycle is stolen or badly damaged having the correct bike insurance cover could make a huge amount of difference.

Scooter theft leaves Wakefield disabled man prisoner

A disabled pensioner has been left housebound after his mobility scooter was stolen and trashed.  His mobility scooter, which gives him contact with the outside world, was stolen by heartless thieves, who then smashed it up and threw it into a nearby pond.   The 79-year-old suffers from a serious lung condition, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which means he cannot walk more than few steps without becoming out of breath.

Mobility Scooter Theft

Arthur Wheeler, 79 years old from Stanley, Wakefield, pictured with his wife Joan

Mr Wheeler and wife Joan, 77, woke up on Saturday morning to discover the scooter was missing.  Mrs Wheeler, of Balk Crescent, said: “We couldn’t believe it; I don’t know how anybody could stoop so low.  He relies on the scooter to get out of the house and he uses it every day to go up to the shop for his paper.”

The couple’s sons eventually found the scooter after searching the area around their home, dumped in a fishing pond near to his home in Stanley.
Using a lasso they dragged it out of the water but it had been damaged beyond repair.

But because the scooter had been parked outside the back of their bungalow at the time, it was not covered by insurance.

Mrs Wheeler, who also uses a mobility scooter, said: “Even a second-hand one would cost between £200 to £300, which is a lot of money.”

The theft happened sometime between last Friday evening and Saturday morning. Police investigations are on-going and officers want to speak to anyone who spotted anything suspicious.

Anyone with information should contact the North West neighbourhood police team on 0845 6060606, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Storing your mobility scooter

Have you recently got a new mobility scooter for either yourself or family member? As well as providing users with increased mobility and freedom when travelling outdoors, don’t forget to consider the safety and security elements for keeping the new vehicle safe.

Mobility Scooters give users a new lease of life.

Storing your Mobility Scooter

One of the most important questions to answer when it comes to looking after your new mobility scooter is how to keep it safe and secure overnight or when not in use.  Below is an overview of the different options you have available.

Before we discuss the different options, it is a good idea to look at the type of vehicle you have as well as the existing storage space available.  Mobility scooters come in all shapes and sizes, and for the majority of people may need to be kept outdoors or in the garden.

If you are lucky enough to have an existing garage with plenty of room for a mobility scooter, this may be your first option. However, think about how convenient it will be to access the scooter as many garages also store cars, bikes, lawnmowers as well as general clutter.  So is it easy for the user to be able to go in and take out the mobility scooter from the garage whenever it is required or will they require assistance?

Alternatively, a lightweight waterproof cover for mobility scooter may be used outdoors to protect from rain or damage.  These are fine for temporary protection or even when used if you are storing the mobility scooter in a garage to protect from dust for a long period of time.

But even if you have a garage or a garden shed but are looking for a more permanent place to keep your mobility scooter secure, then a secure metal storage unit, such as the Mobility Scooter Storage Shed from Asgard may be more suitable for you.
