Combat the rise in fishing tackle theft

Garden and shed theft has steadily been on the rise over the last year. From bikes to garden flowers, nothing left outside is off limits for these criminals.  The news over July has highlighted the theft of fishing tackle in various parts of the country. If you are a keen fisher you will know that this equipment is expensive, making it very appealing to thieves. In Spilsby a shed was broken into and various pieces of fishing tackle were stolen. Thieves in Weymouth broke into a garden shed and stole £6,000 worth of fishing equipment and again in Norwich a shed break in resulted in fishing tackle being stolen.

All of these thefts had one thing in common, the fishing equipment was stored in a garden shed. Local police are warning people of shed and garage break-ins. If you do store expensive items in your shed it is important to invest in security, as well as marking valuables so that if they do get stolen they will be easier to find. Fishing is enjoyable and ever increasing hobby, but the smell can be off putting. Most people do not like that to linger in their home once the fun and adrenaline has ended, or to hear their wife nagging them about the smell. After every fishing trip, blow out reels with a can of compressed air, then cover the reel with a reel bag. A Reel bag will help keep dirt, grime and insects out of your reel mechanics. Lubricate your reel, if necessary, before storing it away. Store all bulk line in a cool, dark place as direct sunlight will damage monofilament over a period of time.
 
« Rod Storage – Manufacturers have made fishing rods tougher but graphite and fibreglass rods are still easy to break. Your best bet is to store rods inside plastic rod cases or tubes. Otherwise, store rods off the floor such as in a wall-mounted rack or on a shelf of a fishing tackle storage unit in an upright position.
 
« Removing Hooks – Whenever possible, take extra precautions by removing all hooks from your fishing line before heading for home. Tie a metal washer on the line, then park the washer on the reel handle. You can also tie a loop with the fishing line and park the line on the reel handle. This simple precaution will prevent snags and accidental hookings.
 
« Parking Hooks -If you do not want to take the time to remove your hooks or lures, at least park them safely by pushing the sharp points into the rod handle. If your rod handle is made of a solid material, cover the hook points with a small bit of cork. Reel the lure or hook all the way to the tip of the rod and lock the handle.

Evesham Fishing Festival 2011

The Evesham Fishing Festival in Worcestershire is back for 2011 and promises to be bigger and better than ever, with a star-studded line-up of anglers and a host of other great attractions planned for the weekend!

The FREE three-day August Bank Holiday festival takes place at the historic market town and is one of the longest-running fixtures in the angling calendar, with three jam-packed days of fishing.  Starting with the poplar Shakespeare Championship on Saturday, August 27th, followed by the Wychavon Championship on Sunday, 28th and ends with the 14-team Match Fishing Team Championship on the 29th – There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with all the angling action!

The Evesham Fishing Festival is a fabulous day out for fishing fans!

 The annual fishing show is hugely popular – with nearly 50,000 visitors attending last year, and it was the first time that bloodworm and joker were allowed for all three days and this turned out to be a resounding success, with countless fish caught throughout the length – exactly what a spectator-driven event like this needs!  Watch highlights from the 2010 Evesham Fishing Festival here
