Ski Maintenance

If you’re new to skiing, planning your first ski holiday or just want to know more about how to take care of your skis, here is the information you’ve been searching for. It is important to keep your skis in the best condition.

Wax

If your skis are slow and sticky, this is a sign that they need waxing. If you are skiing regularly, your skis should be waxed every 5 days or so.

Sharpen

A day or two of skiing can dull the edges of your skis. You can check if your skis need sharpening by running your fingernail across the edge of your ski. If it is sharp, it should take a shaving from your fingernail. Edge maintenance is quick and easy to carry out.

Clean

Your skis should be cleaned after every use. Wipe off excess moisture before storage, as this will prevent rust.  Hanging your skis vertically will also allow your skis to dry quickly

Storage

asgard-ski-storage
You skis should be stored in a dry area, to prevent the steel edges from rusting. If you have little space in your home and need somewhere dry and secure to store your skis, Asgard have a range of different sports equipment storage solutions and the Ski Storage unit does exactly what it says, store your skis! The Ski storage unit is made from strong galvanised (weatherproof) steel and is highly secure. Security is the focus of this ski storage unit, it is fitted with a tough 5 point locking system and pick resistant locking mechanism, to prevent theft. The reinforced doors, hinges and panels add resistance to forced entry, making this metal storage unit incredibly tough! This unit is also insurance approved by the Loss Prevention Certification Board to level 1, which could help to reduce insurance premiums. Unlike a wooden storage shed, Asgard Sports equipment storage units are designed to keep wind and rain out and are fitted with a wind and rain guard to do the job. The ski storage unit can be used in conjunction with your existing garage for added security, or can be placed outside.  To find out more about the Asgard ski storage unit and sports equipment storage, visit the Asgard website.

Storing your ski equipment/ Snowboard storage

We have just come back from our last ski holiday until September ( :o (. Now it is time to store my skis until later in the year. If stored in the correct manner my skis and ski equipment will be so much better when you dust them off for the next ski adventure. Storing my skis correctly will help them last longer and perform better.

Ski storage doesn’t take long and is a very easy process.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

Cloth

Wax

Waxing iron

Screwdriver

Ski straps

Closet

Step 1

Clean your skis.

Wipe dirt and grime off of them with a cloth. Dry them of any excess water so rust does not accumulate on the metal portions.Step 2

Dry your boots. You may need to remove the liner to dry any trapped moisture. This will help prevent mold and mildew from forming.

Step 3

Hot wax your skis. Use a waxing iron and drip wax over the bases and be sure to cover the edges. Use a heavy coating of wax. Do not scrape.

Step 4

Loosen the binding springs with a screwdriver. Do this on the toe and heel-piece for each binding. This gives the tension in the springs a break. Plus it is important to have your skis and bindings tested each year as a safety measure.

Step 5

Once boots are dry, replace the liner and buckle the boots into a closed position.

Step 6

Strap skis together with ski straps.

Step 7

Find a dry place to leave your equipment, some where away from constant people traffic and sticky fingers.  This can be a garage, or in the garden shed.  Given the cost and delibate nature of these items the best solution is probably a dedicated unit.  Ideally a tough weather proof unit  with a good strong locking system and made from rust proof material – This will keep your equipment dry, safe from theft and rodents.  Ventilation is a good idea too, some air flow will prevent mold etc. on damp items.

Step 8

Leave skis standing upright.  Possibly hanging off a rail or hook.

Now the sun has arrived at last, it’s time to start thinking about holidays. Many of you are beach beauties but there are a lot of holiday adventurers out there. Mountain Biking, Walking, Skiing, Diving… You name it and there is an adventure holiday for it. So, if you are like most of us, you go on holiday, have a great time, get home, throw all your equipment in the garage or attic and forget about it until next year.

Come that next big holiday, your equipment is dusty, rusty and damaged – back to the shop for a replacement.

Look after your equipment and it will look after you.   Maybe its keeping your mountain bike oiled and dry, keeping your skis waxed and spring tensions removed or storing your diving equipment in a secure manner. All your equipment needs to be stored safely and securely, away from prying eyes, moisture and the children.

Sports Equipment Storage

Asgard have developed a number of sports equipment storage units. These tough weatherproof all metal units are made from galvanised steel. This makes them rust proof, so there is no need to worry about putting your wet equipment in. The Asgard range of secure metal storage units are unique as they all have built (hidden) in vents in the roof.   This clever feature allows moisture to escape helping to reduce condensation inside the units, keeping your expensive equipment in perfect condition.

As the units are made from tough heavy gauge metal they are very secure and rodent proof, so no mice holes.   But what makes them such a good choice??   We have picked the most common sports equipment units available for all manner of sports and had a good look at each of them.

We have asked several different people who take part in these sports to comment on each. We know all about the highly successful Asgard Bike Storage units, so we will start with the secure sports storage unit for skis and ski equipment.

The comments:

“Seems very expensive for what is essentially a large coat hanger. I don’t understand the purpose of it. It looks easy enough to fix to the garage wall, but I ski only twice a year, so I would imagine my skis would get damaged as we go about our daily life. Would be better if it was in a cupboard or maybe a wardrobe”- A

“Where can I put my jackets?? They are too big to put in our wardrobe, so they will still have to go upstairs in the attic, so I don’t see a point of keeping the skis in the garage and the jackets etc else where”- B

“No good to me. I keep all my equipment outside in the shed wrapped up in an old sleeping bag, so nobody knows what they are.  They  don’t offer any way of hiding what they are, everything is on show.  I would be tempted to put a chain around them for security” - C

2:   Asgard sports storage (storage for ski equipment): Price around £500. Large unit suitable for internal and external use.  Holds multiple sets of skis, jackets, snowboards and boots. Made from rust proof heavy gauge metal, integral metal floor a 5 point locking system approved to level 1 by the Loss Prevention Certification Board.

The comments:

“I have some Solomon skis, costing around £500 so this unit is as much as the skis.  With that in mind it’s good that the unit is so big, I could actually get all three sets of our ski gear in here with all the boots etc. So at £500 that is a little more sensible. The locking mechanism is excellent, very secure. If the LPCB certification gets an insurance discount then that would be excellent”. “I would be happy to leave this outside in the garden un attended” - A

“I like this idea. We don’t have room in the garage for a special ski store (who does??) so this would go in the garden. Looks quite a stylish unit and seems very secure, so I would think it would keep all my clothes safe.. It’s not cheap though, but if it is insurance approved it would probably be worth it given we have around £3000 of equipment. Looks like there may be room for the lawn mower as well so it could be multipurpose”. – B

“Looks better than my wooden shed. The vented roof is a good idea keeping moisture of my stuff. It would be nice to get rid of the sleeping bags and the mice that now seem to live in them.  The free integrated tool rail is a great idea, good for hanging masks etc.”. - C
