Garden Theft

Gardening has never been more popular. As the recession bites hard more and  more people either have more time on their hands due to the economic down turn or they have decided to grow their own produce.

This has resulted in a massive surge in garden equipment and garden related sales. Have you noticed just HOW busy the garden centres are these days!  This is great news for the environment and a great way of saving a bit of money.  One positive aspect of the recession is that garden tools are now cheaper than they have ever been, so there really is no excuse to getting your hands dirty.

Unfortunately this positive green action has given rise to a sharp increase in garden related theft.

The most common targets are small hand held tools such as spades and forks.  These can be easily concealed under a coat or jacket and sold for only a fraction of what they cost you.  You may also be at risk from house theft as garden tools are often used to gain entry to property.  See our blog on house burglary.

I have collected some information from online gardening websites and pulled together some hints and tips on securing your garden against theft.

Safe Tool Storage

Insurance

The first thing you should be doing is ensuring that your home contents insurance covers all of the equipment which is kept outside of the house and that it is sufficient to cover the total value of these garden items. If you have items of specific value – for example a ride on mower, you may wish to consider a dedicated garden insurance policy.  Garden insurance is often over looked by home owners

Only ten or so insurers in the UK offer garden cover as standard…

Sheds and Garages

At one time, you would be able to keep all of your garden valuables in a small shed but such are the array of tools and other gardening gadgets on offer these days that sheds have got bigger and, for those of us with garages, the space is now being utilised more for the rest of our garden equipment which will no longer fit in our shed so you need to put yourself in the mindset of a potential burglar and determine how easy you’d think it would be to break into them.

A good quality metal shed like seem like a quite a large investment (several hundred pounds) but think of how much it will cost in time and effort to replace the contents of a shed that has been broken into.  This is a list of the average shed contents:

Lawn mower – £150

Garden furniture – £499

Tools (rakes spades etc. £200

Paint – £35

Childrens bikes – £80

Ladders – £60

Misc – £100

Over £1000 in total.

So why buy a £99 shed to store 10 times the value inside?

Metal garden sheds are ideal for storing tools

Many people over look the content value of their shed.  Lets not forget the added concern with shed theft. Thieves will often break into your house using your own garden tools.

Pete Spicer, Crime Prevention Officer, said: “The Police often stop and search known burglars to see if they are “going equipped” to do a burglary. So rather than take anything with them they will use whatever they can find to force entry to a house – having an unsecured shed could mean the difference between being broken into or not.”

Fences, Gates, Bushes and Security Lighting Systems

All of these are good all additional barriers for a burglar to negotiate before they can even get near to your shed or garage so make sure you have these things in place to deter thieves in the first place.

Marking Your Equipment

Thieves prefer items which they can get rid of quickly and because gardening and hobbies related to the garden have become increasingly popular, they are attracted to gardening tools, in particular, because they’re very easy to sell on. Therefore, mark each piece of equipment with both an invisible pen containing your postcode (to track your stolen items) and also in a visible way to deter the theft in the 1st place/.  With these simple measures in place a thief is more likely to move on to another target where security might not be so much of an issue.

When You’ve Run Out Of Storage Space

If you find you’ve used up all of the available storage space in your shed and garage, it’s a good idea to fix items to an immovable object or, if it’s some type of equipment which can be operated without moving it, maybe you could set the base in concrete.   Ground anchors are a very cheap method of doing this.  Normally used for securing bike and motorcycles these can be a highly effective method of protecting your equipment.  The best ground anchors to look for carry a sold secure badge.  For more information about Sold secure products.

Tell Your Neighbours

It’s important that you don’t get over-obsessed about preventing your garden gear being stolen. By following the advice above and taking other advice from other articles contained in this section, it should be more than enough to put off a potential thief who would much sooner prefer to find an easier target to hit. However, if you’re going away on holiday or on business and leaving your property empty, it’s a good idea to let your closest neighbour know when you’re going and when you’ll be back so that they can keep an eye on things for you.

Top ten tips for securing your garden and garden equipment.

1. Write your postcode on valuable garden items such as barbecues with ultra-violet pen

2. Check your sheds and gates for winter deterioration, and repair if necessary

3. Replace any rusting padlocks or locks with stronger alternatives

4. Take photographs of valuable items to keep in case of theft

5. Always go for a metal shed as opposed to a wooden one.  Metal is stronger and much harder to break into.  A good quality metal shed will be galvansied, lasting decades rather than months.

6. Protect statues with a simple alarm that will go off if they are moved

7. Secure valuable trees with tree anchors

8. Use prickly plants such as roses or pyracantha to deter thieves

9. Install good garden security lighting

10. Lock away valuable items after you have used them.

Garden Buildings and Outdoor Sheds

Whether you have an existing garden building or a wooden shed, or you are planning to buy a new shed or even build one yourself, there are a number of different factors to take into consideration.

iStock_000007941912XSmall Garden Building

Does your Garden Building needs a makeover?

As the outdoor storage unit experts at Shedforce, we have put together a breakdown of each of the elements of a shed to help you make the best decision for your garden building.

Garden Buildings and Shed floors

There are a number of different options when it comes to the floors of a typical garden building, the most common one being a wooden sub-floor, which is fitted at the base of the shed.

Asgard sheds also go one step further then most shed manufacturers with their integrated metal base floor, which is bolted to the ground sealing the unit together to increase the stability and security of the garden building.  The wooden floor is then placed on top of this base in order to protect the metal base and to reduce noise.

Garden Building Doors

Access to your garden building is the most important part of the unit, and the design of the shed or garage door also has affects the security it offers.  Depending on the sized of the shed, it may be a single door or double door access.

The design and material used for the door of a garden building door also affects the security of the unit.  Although metal sheds have an advantage over wooden doors, as wooden doors can be easier to break into, it depends on the quality of the metal shed.  Some lightweight metal sheds are not very sturdy or well built; offering very little protection, in comparison to the tough metal sheds like the metal sheds manufactured by Asgard.  The Asgard sheds are manufactured from galvanised steel and are built from the inside out, meaning that there are no visible hinges or weaknesses to enable break-ins and theft.

Garden buildings with doors

Asgard Sheds don’t have exposed hinges and screws making it difficult to break into.

Garden Building Roofs

A Garden building or shed can either come with a flat pent or apex roof.  The difference between these is that a shed a pent roof is formed using a single sheet of wood that slopes from the front of the building to the back with a slight angle. The slope ensures rain runs off the back of the shed.  A pent roof is ideal if your shed will be installed up against a fence or a wall.  However, this means as the roof slopes from the front to back, the maximum height is at the front of the shed which limits the layout of shelving and the available internal storage space.

In comparison, an apex shed, has a pointed roof to create an upturned ‘V’ shape. Unlike a pent roof, the maximum height of an apex roof runs centrally from the front to the back. The height of the eaves is designed to allow for generous storage at the sides while allowing for optimum standing height in the centre.

The engineers from Asgard have gone one step further and have designed a rainguard on the roof of some of their garden sheds, as pictured below.

Shed roof with rainguard

Garden Building Shelving

The main purpose of a garden building, garage or shed is to provide secure outdoor storage for all the expensive property and equipment you don’t have the space to stay inside your home.  This includes bicycles, motorbikes, barbeques and gas bottles, lawn mowers, power tools gardening equipment.  All these items can soon stack up to create a messy, cluttered garden shed.  Therefore heavy-duty shelving, hooks and eyelets should be used to organise all the property lying around and maximise on the space with in the garden building.

Asgard have recognised the importance of making the most of compact garden sheds and have recently introduced Eyelets for their units which can be attached to the frame of the unit to help owners to create an organised storage space.

Garden Buildings with windows

Many people like the idea of a window in their garden shed. However, with a traditional wooden shed, windows increase the chances of a thief breaking and entering a shed by smashing through the glass window and stealing valuable property being stored in a garden shed.

Common materials used for a shed window include Perspex or polycarbonate material, as well as glass.  However, the issues of safety and the cost of replacing any broken windows may be an issue.

Another alternative would be to look at sheds with vents, which provide ventilation to a shed without compromising on the safety of the shed.

Asgard Bike Store Unit – A Customer Review

At Asgard, we believe we are the experts in secure steel storage, so we always like to know whether our customers agree with us.   The Access Bike Store is one of our best-selling secure bicycle storage units with many happy customers all over the UK, including Mr I. W. from Edinburgh who recently ordered a bike storage unit from Asgard.

Read on to see what he thought about his new unit….

“I’m delighted with my Access bike store.  Order to delivery time was the quoted 3 weeks, which left me ample time to prepare a solid foundation for the unit.  It was delivered exactly when arranged, and the guys gave me useful assembly tips.

Assembly was pretty straightforward after carefully reading the instructions, but 2 people are essential, e.g. for lifting the roof into position, and for generally holding panels upright whilst the other person inserts the screws.  The precise alignment of the lock location holes (on the roof and front doors) by the insertion of the supplied shims underneath the unit was quite fiddly and took some time to get just right.  In addition, the M5 screws to fit the lock shrouds to the unit were unusually tight, this could have been due to paint on the internal threads of the inserts on the shrouds.

The green colour blends in very well in my garden, and if the bikes are stored in the right order, the unit accommodates 2 adult bikes and 3 kids bikes.

Keep you bicycle safe, secure and dry in the Access Bike Storage Unit!

Overall the unit is excellent value for money, completely weatherproof and is extremely secure & durable - particular attention has clearly been made to these critical areas during the design. It outclasses any bike storage alternatives that I have seen, and thus I would recommend the Access bike store to anyone.”

Storing your mobility scooter

Have you recently got a new mobility scooter for either yourself or family member? As well as providing users with increased mobility and freedom when travelling outdoors, don’t forget to consider the safety and security elements for keeping the new vehicle safe.

Mobility Scooters give users a new lease of life.

Storing your Mobility Scooter

One of the most important questions to answer when it comes to looking after your new mobility scooter is how to keep it safe and secure overnight or when not in use.  Below is an overview of the different options you have available.

Before we discuss the different options, it is a good idea to look at the type of vehicle you have as well as the existing storage space available.  Mobility scooters come in all shapes and sizes, and for the majority of people may need to be kept outdoors or in the garden.

If you are lucky enough to have an existing garage with plenty of room for a mobility scooter, this may be your first option. However, think about how convenient it will be to access the scooter as many garages also store cars, bikes, lawnmowers as well as general clutter.  So is it easy for the user to be able to go in and take out the mobility scooter from the garage whenever it is required or will they require assistance?

Does your garage look like this?!

Alternatively, a lightweight waterproof cover for mobility scooter may be used outdoors to protect from rain or damage.  These are fine for temporary protection or even when used if you are storing the mobility scooter in a garage to protect from dust for a long period of time.

But even if you have a garage or a garden shed but are looking for a more permanent place to keep your mobility scooter secure, then a secure metal storage unit, such as the Mobility Scooter Storage Shed from Asgard may be more suitable for you.
